The Wheeling Convention and Visitors Bureau is the new owner of the historic Capitol Music Hall.
“This is an historic day for our community and we are proud to be re-opening a building that houses so many memories,” said Frank O’Brien, executive director of the Wheeling-Ohio County CVB.
“The reputation of the Capitol Music Hall is nothing short of legendary,” O’Brien continued. “We are excited to fill the building with the same enthusiasm and life that it portrayed when its doors opened over 80 years ago.”
The Wheeling CVB and its Board of Directors believe this investment will enhance tourism for the downtown region. According to CVB Board President Hydie Friend, funds invested into the Capitol Music Hall are a result of tourists who have and will visit the Friendly City. She noted that the Capitol Music Hall will be a crucial component of the city’s ability to continue to attract such visitors.
The Capitol will be a premier venue for National touring acts such as comedians, Broadway shows, concerts, theater productions, and operas. The theater will also be available for rental by local groups for events such as movies, Festival of Lights concerts, and dance recitals. The Wheeling Symphony will be proud to call the Capitol Music Hall home. The theater will be operated by the Wheeling Municipal Auditorium Board, the current operator of Wesbanco Arena.
According to a study conducted by the *Economics Research Associates (ERA), the re-opening of the Capitol Music Hall will have an economic impact of more than $5.5 million, create 65 new spin-off jobs with an estimated $1.3 million dollar annual payroll, and generate more than $174,000 in new tax revenue.
The Capitol Music Hall along with Wesbanco Arena and the Heritage Port Amphitheater creates an entertainment venue portfolio that is second to none in the region. These three venues will enable a year-round coordinated approach to producing top notch entertainment. These events will attract visitors to our city and will enhance the quality of life of current residents.
Immediate renovations to the interior will ensure the building is modernized and meets current code standards. The partnership plans to restore the building to maintain its architectural integrity.
Mayor Andy McKenzie says, “A re-opened Capitol Music Hall is a community project that is a positive step in the revitalization of Downtown and we are pleased to see these agencies working together for the good of our community.”
